Loft Conversion Types We Cover
Five conversion types. Which one you need is decided by your roof, not your budget.
The Five Types
Every loft conversion in West London is a version of one of five types, and the one you need is set by the shape of your house before money enters the conversation. A mid-terrace can't have a hip to gable — there's no hip to fill in. A loft with 1.8 metres under the ridge can't have a rooflight conversion at any price.
So the useful order is: work out what your roof is pointing at, then find out what that costs. The five pages below do the first part. If you're not sure which describes you, the type guide walks through it as a decision, and a surveyor will settle it in ten minutes on site.
Hip to Gable
For the hipped-roof semis that fill Greenford, Perivale, Northolt and Harrow. Fills in the sloping side of the roof to square off the space. Usually paired with a rear dormer.
Learn More →Dormer
A box built out from the rear roof slope to create full standing height and a flat ceiling. The most common conversion in West London, and often permitted development.
Learn More →L-Shaped Dormer
For terraces with a rear outrigger. Joins the main roof and the outrigger roof into one space, typically big enough for a bedroom and a bathroom.
Learn More →Mansard
Rebuilds the rear roof to something close to vertical. The most space you can get from a loft, and the most planning involved.
Learn More →Velux & Rooflight
Rooflights in the existing roof slope, nothing structural changed outside. The cheapest route, but only if your loft already has the head height.
Learn More →Still Not Sure Which One?
The type guide works through it as a decision, house by house. The cost guide gives the ranges for each.
